“Towards the Chicken of the Future”

A Symposium on Chicken Biology

DEADLINE TO REGISTER: CLOSED

This conference, to be hosted at the Royal Veterinary College’s Hawkshead Campus on April 23-24, 2014, will highlight the biology of domestic chickens, in particular commercial broiler and layer breeds.

The top international researchers in this broad field will feature in the symposium to achieve two main aims:

  1. To disseminate research that is leading the way in our understanding of chicken biology and how this can be used to approach the significant challenges facing the domestic chicken industry.
  2. To consolidate this understanding into a statement founded on modern scientific evidence with the intent of shaping future government policy.

Domestic chickens are an important worldwide food industry that faces many present and future challenges. For example, broiler chickens are subject to a range of health problems that are related to rapid growth rates and high body mass. Not only are these problems a significant welfare issue, but they also consequently represent an economic cost to industry.

Presentations

The chicken biology symposium, to be held over two days, will feature presentations that address the problems and potential solutions in five thematic sessions:

  • Gait and Biomechanics
  • Physiology and Pathology
  • Infectious diseases
  • Genetics and Breeding
  • Welfare and Behaviour

These sessions have been designed to facilitate discussion on a wide range of topics that concern domestic poultry. Each session will consist of five top experts’ 30-minute presentations followed by roundtable discussions with contributions welcome from all attendees. Talks will be broadly accessible, appealing not only to researchers but also industry and policymakers. By bringing together a diverse range of expertise, we hope to provide the ideal forum for discussion of domestic chicken biology and how to confront the challenges facing the poultry industry. For more about the confirmed speakers and organisers see here. The near-final, unofficial programme is downloadable as a pdf here!
